Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Arequipa

Arrive in Arequipa. Your guide meets you at the airport and accompanies you to the hotel to help you check in.

Hotel: La Casa de Melgar or similar

Day 2: Explore the White City

Start your day with a visit to the Santa Catalina Monastery. Stepping through the doors of this four-centuries-old monastery feels like stepping back in time. Your guide will walk you through the maze-like structure and tell you stories about what life was like behind the cloistered walls.

Stroll through the Plaza de Armas, Arequipa’s picturesque main square, on your way to visit the Sanctuaries Museum. At the museum, you can see the mummy of Juanita curled up as if she were sleeping. As a teenager, she was sacrificed to the Inca gods and buried at nearly 21,000 feet on the icy slopes of Mount Ampato. Time Magazine cited her discovery in 1995 as one of the world’s top 10 discoveries that year.

Then, explore the peaceful neighborhood of Yanahuara. The San Juan Bautista Church sits on the main square. Its façade is constructed of finely sculpted white ash from the nearby volcanoes. A series of stone arches frame the white city of Arequipa below.

Travel to Carmen Alto, a small town surrounded by checkerboard farming terraces dating from the time of the Inca. You can also see three big volcanoes in the distance while you enjoy a picnic lunch.

Top off your day with a visit to Intiwawa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting poverty.

Finally, tour the 16th century flourmill and country estate built of volcanic rock at Sabandia to see what life was like for the gentry during colonial times.

Enjoy a light dinner on the balconies of one of the many restaurants surrounding the square.
